Tip: the bearing is measured from true North. If you use a physical compass, remember it points to magnetic North, which can differ by a few degrees depending on where you live. On a phone, hold it flat and away from metal or magnets for the best reading.

What is the Qibla?

The Qibla is the direction that Muslims face when they pray. It points towards the Kaaba — الكعبة — the cube-shaped building in the centre of Masjid al-Haram, the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Whichever country a Muslim is in, the direction of prayer is worked out from that single point on the map, so a person praying in Toronto, London or Karachi all turn towards the same place.

Because the Earth is round, the Qibla is not simply "east" or "west". It follows the shortest path over the surface of the Earth — the great-circle route — which is why the Qibla from North America points north-east, even though Makkah feels like it should be "to the east". MyQibla calculates this shortest-path direction for you, in degrees clockwise from true North.

How this Qibla finder works

When you tap Use My Location, your browser asks for your permission to share your position. If you allow it, we take your latitude and longitude and ask the Aladhan Qibla service for the direction of the Kaaba from that point; we also show the result of the standard great-circle calculation as a cross-check and fall back to it if the service is unavailable. The distance shown is the straight-line great-circle distance between you and the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E), worked out with the haversine formula.

No location? Search for any city instead, or tap one of the popular cities. If your phone has a compass sensor, tap Enable Live Compass and the dial will rotate as you turn, so you can line the gold Kaaba needle up with the marker at the top of the dial and know you are facing the Qibla.

How to use the Qibla direction

  1. Find your bearing. Use your location or search your city and note the degree figure — for example, 256°.
  2. Face that direction. With the live compass, turn slowly until the gold needle points straight up. With a normal compass, turn until you face the degree number shown.
  3. Keep it practical. Small differences of a degree or two are normal with phone sensors. Recheck away from cars, speakers and metal furniture, which disturb compasses.

Whether you are at home, travelling, at work or in a new city, MyQibla gives you a dependable direction in seconds — no app install and no account needed.
